WHAT WE DO
CTI BUILDS OPPORTUNITIES in LIVELIHOOD, EDUCATION & HEALTH
Livelihood
CTI believes that flexible and diverse livelihood opportunities which teaches life-skills are needed to uplift those who are vulnerable economically, those with different abilities, in crisis or dealing with different brokenness in their lives. We partner with Prudential Assurance to be their local distributor for PRUkasih, an income protection plan. We also have a sewing centre in collaboration with The Batik Boutique. We are currently piloting group initiatives where community members can learn skills in baking and cooking, and come together to market their products.
PROGRAMS
PRUkasih – an Income Protection Programme
This program (in partnership with Yayasan Generasi Gemilang (GG) and Prudential Assurance Malaysia Berhad (PAMB) aims to build financial resilience of urban poor families via income protection against sickness, accidents and death. These households which previously had little social safety net now gets to enjoy some measure of food and household security through the Giant vouchers and rent subsidy given during times when the breadwinner is on medical leave due to sickness or accident or due to the unfortunate death of a breadwinner. Financial Education also provides further sustainability. Since 2016 CTI has been the Distributor of this program in partnership with Generasi Gemilang and Prudential Foundation. Up till mid 2019 we have registered 63.7% households, processed and help disbursed up to RM372,000 worth of claims to 140 needful residents.
Kelompok Kerja
We connect with vulnerable women in need of extra income in the community. As most need to care for their children and cannot work full time, we sought opportunities for them to bake or cook for bake sales and for the festive season. We have also introduced them to do ad hoc catering for events.
Sewing Centre (in collaboration with The Batik Boutique)
In collaboration with The Batik Boutique, we train women from low-income backgrounds to produce gifts and fashion accessories made from a traditional Malaysian fabric (batik). The Batik Boutique (TBB) is an award-winning social enterprise created to disrupt the cycle of poverty in Malaysia. This social enterprise empowers women from marginalised communities through training and opportunities that aim to promote independence. Today, more than 150 artisans have worked with Batik Boutique to gain a fair sustainable income and marketable skills. Since the beginning of 2017, we have expanded and moved the fledgling sewing centre which was operating from one of the PPR KD flats, to a second floor shoplot in Seksyen 8 of Kota Damansara.
(This project is in partnership with The Batik Boutique https://www.thebatikboutique.com/ and with support from various organizations including the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MBPJ) and EKUINAS)
